Gabbies Sewing Angels is a non-profit organisation that creates clothing and basic necessities for communities in need, using Sheridan's fabric offcuts.

We sit down with Founder, Patricia Will, to discuss how Gabbies Sewing Angels has evolved since its inception 18 years ago.

Gabbies Sewing Angels came about when a friend of mine was making clothes to take back to Africa with her.

I helped her by taking the patterns and sewing them at craft camps every week. There was another friend at craft camp who noticed what I was doing and offered I come down to church and show other ladies. So, I came back with 70 articles and asked what they could make.

It has grown from a few of us to over 40 people just by word of mouth. We started with one night a week and expanded to one day a week, and then everyone saidcustomized baby gifts, ‘can’t we come more?’ So, we now meet every Tuesday and Thursday from 9am – 3pm.

Aside from the joy of giving back to those in need, it creates a sense of community and a social life for those that come. Many live alone, and it serves that purpose of bringing people together, and they’re just such a wonderful group of people.

We make a variety of items, from baby clothing through to trauma teddy bears, sanitary sets, and baby kits. We created baby kits for newborns when we discovered they were going home from hospital wrapped in newspaper. We have also made 8000 dresses this year alone. I just get the biggest grin on my face to think that I’ve been able to do just one little thing making these.

We work with a number of organisations and people that distribute our product, all whom have reached out through word of mouth. We work with Wrapped With Love who works with Syrians, while a friend’s nephew fills a container of items to give to communities in Fiji, and we recently sent a pile of items to Broken Hill for drought stricken people.

There are some truly incredible stories of giving to those in need. Two of us travelled to Timor to hand deliver some items with two organisers. We pulled up at this isolated place, they pulled the horn and out came two ladies and a little boy, who we gave a box of our clothing to. We were actually there and saw it, and that is a priceless experience.

The most rewarding part? Seeing the interaction between one another, the sharing with one another and the caring for one another. It’s a great community.
